So there’s a bit of a stigma surrounding the idea that listing your business on an online business directory. I can understand why – business directories in South Africa seem a bit dodgy but I’m gonna give you three reasons why listing your business on a business directory is actually a good idea.

Reason #1: Good Exposure

So the first reason and maybe the most obvious is if you list your company on a business directory the chances are good that customers or potential customers might see your listing.

Reason #2: Good Backlinks

Reason number two, a lot of these sites have good backlinks pointing back to your website. Now if you don’t have a website that’s fine these directories can serve as your online presence until you’ve got a website up and running.

Reason #3: Good SEO

And finally, reason number three and I think most importantly, these companies have invested a lot of money in building the SEO for their website they’ve actually gone through all the trials and errors to establish themselves quite well on Google, Yahoo or Bing. In other words you don’t need to pay an SEO expert to boost your online presence for you. They’ve done it already.

Now just remember, if you are considering listing your company on these online directories, there are a few things you have to keep in mind.

Tip #1: Reputation

Only register on popular or well-known business directories. You don’t want to be associated with any spammy or dodgy companies.

Tip #2: Free or Cheap

Only register if it’s free or very reasonably priced. Because you have to remember, it’s not guaranteed that you’re going to get work from these directories. It’s only exposure. No business directory can promise you work.

Tip #3: Location Counts

Also only a register with directories that are based in your country or in the countries that you intend on doing business with. There’s no point in registering with Yelp in South Africa.

BONUS Tip: Keep it up to date!

And the bonus tip, please remember to keep your information relevant and up-to-date. Make a point of it, say maybe bi-monthly, login check your email address, check your telephone numbers, check that all the information listed is still valid and correct. There’s nothing as frustrating as actually trying to get a hold of a company just to find out that the contact number doesn’t exist anymore.

So what do you think about business directory listing? What’s the best business directory for your company to be listed on? Did you actually make money from these business directories?
